One of our goals this summer is to help Hope conquer her fear of thunderstorms. Although I find it absolutely adorable when her little feet race over to my bedside and she says “ Momma I so scared, can I seep wif you?” I often wonder if God's heart fills with the same LOVE when we get scared during a life storm, and crawl into His lap for protection. The way my heart is so tender towards my children, reminds me of how tender my Heavenly Father's heart is towards me.
Jesus Calms The Storm
Then He got into the boat and His disciples followed Him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, and the waves swept up over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Him up saying “ “Lord save us. We are going to drown.”
He replied “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and then it was completely calm. The men were completely amazed and asked “Who is this man that even the winds and waves obey Him?”
I’ve read this story in the New Testament I don’t know how many times and always thought it was Jesus showing off His power. Kinda like the turning water into wine. But I think there is more in this being revealed than meets the eye.
He was right in the middle of the storm with them...
The analogy of this biblical story is lined out perfectly for us. The presence of this storm took their eyes off the presence of God who was right in the middle of this storm with them. He was completely at peace sleeping amongst the waves and torrential downpour. They wake Him up like, hello? How can you be sleeping? We are about to die here! As if Jesus had no idea of His surroundings. He was right in the middle of the storm with them. Yet they didn't trust Him with their eternal protection. These guys needed to be cleansed of there lack of faith! God how I need my lack of faith at times to be cleansed!
God take us into troubled waters, not to drown us, but to cleanse us of our lack of faith.
Another story similar to this storm is when Jesus asked Peter to walk out upon the water. Can you imagine!
Jesus Walks on the Water (Matthew 14:22-33)
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Once again we see the eyes shifting to the circumstance instead of keeping our focus on Jesus!
I don't know how many times, even as a strong Christ follower like Peter, I have been great one moment, and then the next moment my eyes get shifted towards circumstances instead of what is right in front of me... JESUS.
So maybe you have been laid off from work. You are struggling to make ends meet. You are a single mom barely surviving. Storms in life are inevitable! We cannot avoid them all. But our perspective has everything to do with our survival. Pay no attention to the violent winds and torrential down pour. Fix your eyes on Jesus.
I will end with this quote by C.S Lewis
Look for yourself and you will find loneliness and despair. But look for Christ, and you will find Him and everything else.
